THE RASKINS – Living The Dream

Sure, it’s a tired cliché. You’ve heard the phrase a million times. “Living the dream.” Seriously?

Well yeah, in this case, seriously. Picture this: You’re in a young, unknown band. One day you’re slogging away doing gigs in local clubs, and the next day you’re playing arenas, opening for Motley Crue and Alice Cooper on the Crue’s farewell tour. Pretty damn cool, huh?

Logan Raskin is calling from his tour bus, on the highway somewhere in the middle of the country on the way to the next stop on the tour. His enthusiasm is infectious, and he’s a journalist’s dream–ask him a question and he’ll talk nonstop for five minutes. “It’s been an incredible tour so far, it’s been a dream ride for The Raskins. We’re probably about 20 shows into the tour, and being in front of this many fans, being able to play these monumental arenas, it’s been a dream come true for us. It seems the fans are really digging what we’re doing live, the response has been overwhelming, both bands have been really welcoming, they’re really excited about what we’re doing and they’re really happy we’re an addition to the tour. Yeah, for someone who’s into music as much as myself it’s a dream come true.”

Every young musician reading this with awe and perhaps more than a little bit of jealousy is probably wondering how Logan and his twin brother Roger managed to win the musical equivalent of the lottery.

“Initially, I thought it was going to be tricky getting onto this tour, and I was kind of surprised that the agents and everyone on Motley Crue’s side really liked what we were doing. They liked the videos, and they liked the album. But they needed to get all four guys in Motley Crue into one room at once to make the final decision about having us on the tour. The agent said ‘you know how difficult it is getting those guys into one room?’ We had to wait something like two weeks, they finally got them into one room, and they listened to the music and watched the videos and they loved it! It was their decision to bring us out on this tour. Nikki Sixx it turns out is a fan of our music, he likes our style, plays our music on his radio show all the time. That said, our live show pulls weight! All I can say is come out and see the show. You can see it in the reaction from the fans. We do a meet and greet after the show, and I can see how these fans are excited about what we’re doing, and we really seem to be connecting with these fans. That’s always what we wanted to do. We wanted to have a high-energy rock show, but we wanted to release a record that wasn’t one specific style that really demonstrated our writing and creativity. We’re on this dream ride right now, and all the cards are falling our way, it’s been a magical year so far.”

If getting on the tour was a big challenge, an Everest-sized hurdle to overcome has been to survive and thrive. Not since Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees has there been such an apparent odd pairing. Motley Crue, the original tattooed bad-boy rockers whose glam metal sound was born in the gutters of Los Angeles seems light years away from the upbeat, lighter sound and cleaner image of the Raskins.

When queried on that, Logan responds “That’s a very good question. When you listen to our album, it brings on a couple of thoughts. First of all, when writing this album, we did it ourselves. We wanted to put out a debut album that showcased our writing style and influences—all of those influences. We didn’t want to just put out a straightforward rock record. We wanted a record that showed the dynamics that we have creatively and musically, and we wanted to take people on a ride, not just straightforward rock songs, but pop songs, rock songs, we wanted ballads on there, we wanted to show the depth that The Raskins have musically and creatively. So yes—getting back to your question, being on a tour like this, when The Raskins take the stage, they’re giving us a small window to perform; we do a half-hour set. In that 30 minutes that we play, we pretty much bring it hard. We you see us live, we’re very aggressive on stage, we’re very high-energy, we bring forward the high energy songs because we’re playing such a short set. So when people who are at the concert buy our record later and sit down and listen to it, they say ‘Wow, there’s a lot more dynamic to these guys that we thought.’”

Grunge Frame Raskins Promo 1 F copyThe brothers Raskin have very strong musical roots, starting with their parents. Logan picks up the story: “I grew up in a family of singers. My mom was a jazz singer, my dad was a Broadway fan. When my dad was on Broadway, they didn’t mic anything. You had to sing on stage and reach that back row. So my dad has a very strong theatrical voice. Growing up in that environment, Roger and I became strong singers. That was the first instrument we learned how to use, our voices. Granted, we learned how to play piano and guitar and a bunch of other musical instruments, but vocals were something that was very important to us, it was something that we wanted to feature on this project. We wanted to feature the two of us singing together, because that’s really a magical Raskins sound. It’s not just Logan singing by himself or Roger singing by himself. When we sing together, we create this tonality and sound and style that we define as the Raskins sound. I kind of have a lower raspier voice, and Roger has a higher voice, and we create this sound that defines who we are. We really try to go out of the way to feature that in our music. Growing up in Chelsea in New York, we listened to aggressive rock bands such as the Stooges and Patty Smith and the Ramones and the Talking Heads and the New York Dolls. We were also hugely influenced by Simon and Garfunkle. Huge influence for Roger and I, as was Steely Dan and Ritchie Havens. Hearing an artist such as Simon and Garfunkle, and hearing those vocal harmonies was something that made a big impact on Roger and I. Being in a project together, and having the opportunity to sing together was something that we really wanted to put at the forefront of this project.”

“What people don’t understand is that Roger and I have been in and out of bands our whole lives. We know what that journey has been for us. It’s been a difficult one. People assume that Roger and I have been together in bands for many years, but this is actually the first band that we’ve played in together. We originally started as a writing project. We were writing a lot for TV and film, and that’s how this project got started. We were receiving tons of emails—not just in the U.S., but from fans in Europe and Australia. ‘Where can we buy the music, when can we see you guys play live.’ So basically for us, the writing was on the wall. We felt it was just a matter of time before we had to put this together as a physical band because it seemed that people really wanted to see it and hear it. So that’s what we did, we took about a year, year and a half, recorded all new material for the record. Took time to put a band together. The music supervisor that we used to write for, he couldn’t tell us apart. Didn’t know who was Logan and who was Roger, we were constantly hearing ‘let’s get The Raskins here for a meeting, let’s call The Raskins.’ When it came time to put this project together, it was pretty much a no-brainer for us as to what we were going to call it! We decided to put a band together around us. We got three of the strongest musicians we could find out in Hollywood because that’s where we did some of the recording, we put together this kick-ass band, but for us, being in and out of bands our whole lives, we know how hard it is to keep bands together. This time, we were going to do things a little different. The foundation and the nucleus of the band was going to be Roger and I. Neither of us are going anywhere, we’re not leaving each other, we’re brothers, we’re twins, we’ve been together our whole lives, so there’s a foundation there that we felt was incredibly solid, and something very solid to build upon.”

“We are a band. People kind of think it’s a solo thing, and we’re not that. Roger and I do a lot of acoustic stuff and when we go to the radio stations and TV appearances it will be just Roger and I, but that’s only because they ask for that. We are a full band, and I do what people to realize that. I never wanted to be a solo artist, Roger never wanted to be a solo artist. It seems that since we’re gone with this concept, we’re has success. Things have gone forward.”

Their debut album is a catchy 12-track effort with irresistible hooks and layers of complex vocal parts, but if there is one criticism, it’s that the lyrics are nearly indecipherable. For two guys are place such a strong emphasis on vocals, it’s a bit puzzling. Most songwriters have something very important to say in their lyrics, and would seem to want people to readily be able to pick up what they are singing about.

A Conversation with The Raskins

It’s not everyday you meet a band that truly understands the passion and work ethic it takes to make it in this crazy business.  It’s not everyday that you meet a band that has a true connection with their fans, that take the time to talk, hangout and listen to every single fan.  Today was a day that I met that band – The Raskins.

Comprised of twin New York born and raised brothers, Logan and Roger Raskin were born in this business.  Their father, Tony Raskin, was a Broadway actor starring in feature roles in South Pacific, Oklahoma, and Damn Yankees just to name a few and their mother, Judy Lee Raskin, an accomplished jazz singer.  “Watching my dad perform and watching the audience react to him – that’s what grabbed me into the entertainment business” said Roger Raskin (guitar), who as a kid would sit at the high end of the piano playing while brother Logan (lead vocals) would sit at the low end playing.  “We didn’t have any TVs in the house but we didn’t need that, music filled the house.”  Influenced not just from their parents but also from the NYC rock scene with Blondie, The Ramones, and the New York Dolls, the brothers knew this is exactly what they wanted to do.  And they have certainly done it well.

This past May, The Raskins released their debut album and it’s good – really good (click here for my review) but it’s not just the music itself that makes it good, it’s the passion in it that you hear past the chords that really makes this record special.  “This records is ours, we recorded, we mixed it – it wasn’t easy but it’s our”.  Roger and Logan played all the instruments, recorded it themselves and mixed the record themselves – and that’s not an easy task to tackle.  “We wanted to do it our way”.  The record is raw and organic – no autotune, no funky modulating effects – just pure rock ‘n’ roll.  Plug and play.  They took what they did in the studio and applied it to their live show.

Backed by an incredible team of musicians (Johnny Martin – bass, Jet Lopez – guitar, Troy Patrick Farrell – drums), The Raskins are in the midst of touring the country opening up for Motley Crue’s Farewell tour.  They are gaining new fans by the thousands at every show they open and it’s not just from the live performance but the interaction and relationships they have with their fans.  After their set, they go out and meet everyone at their merch booth and spend the rest of the show signing autographs taking pictures and, more importantly, taking to them.  Roger: “We understand the importance the connection between the band and the audience is.”  Logan: “We answer every email, every tweet and fans know that they can reach us and that is what it is about.”

That really is what it is about – connecting with the fans.  The Raskins are truly great band and even better people.  They have a work ethic that’s like no other and they put 110% on that stage every night.  Do yourself a favor and see The Raskins perform as soon as possible and buy their record now.  They have a long and successful future ahead of them.

Motley Crue, Alice Cooper and the Raskins Performing at Blossom

Last night, Blossom Music Center was packed to capacity with a diverse crowd that came to see Motley Crue’s farewell tour. The youngest audience member looked to be about 5 years old and the oldest appeared to be about 70. Both knew how to rock out. The evening started with a short set by the up and coming band the Raskins, a group that features brothers Logan and Roger Raskin. Their set was straight-up rock ’n’ roll and included their best song, “We Had It All.” Alice Cooper, the king of shock rock and one of the founders of horror rock, followed with a basic greatest hits packages that included “18,” “Poison,” “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” “School’s Out” and many more hits. New female guitarist Nita Strauss joined longtime guitarist Ryan Roxie and the two complimented each other very well. The legendary Crue hit the stage next in a blaze of light and smoke and immediately took fans down memory lane. The hits just kept coming and included “Saints of Los Angeles,” “Wild Side,” “Primal Scream,” “Looks That Kill,” “Without You,” “Dr. Feelgood,” “Shout at the Devil” and “Kickstart My Heart” before concluding with “Home Sweet Home.”

Gear Review: The Raskins Guitarist Roger Raskin on His Custom GMP Guitars and Marshall 900 Dual Channel Amps

Band Links: facebook twitter link_homepage
The Raskins is an alternative rock band composed of twins Logan and Roger Raskin. Born and raised in New York City, the brothers began playing music at a very young age and now, on May 13th, 2014, are set to release their debut self-titled album via MIRAL Records/BDG/RED, LLC division of Sony Music Entertainment. We grabbed some time with guitarist Roger Raskin and asked some gear-related questions in order to learn more about his Custom GMP guitars and Marshall 900 Dual Channel amplifiers.

What one piece of gear do you use to obtain your signature sound?
Roger: I (Roger Raskin) wish I could say it's one piece of gear when in actuality it's two that create The Raskins' magical rock n roll sound. My Marshall 900 dual channel amps and my custom made GMP guitars by GMP and the great Dan Lawrence.

What about it makes it so important to you?
Roger: Well to start my Marshall 900 amps give The Raskins that perfect mid range quality distortion combined with one of the purest clean tones around. We find these particular tones fit perfectly with our music style and sound. Now combing that with my handmade GMP guitars by Dan Lawerence. We took The best mahogany wood we could find along with a custom fitted neck and 498T and classic 59 pickups, makes for a rock n roll sound that, well shall I say, is complete heaven!

What are the major pros and cons?
Roger: The pros for us having this incredible combination of gear enable The Raskins to create any style and type of song possible, thus enabling us to rock any arena and stadium across the globe, with a quality of sound for any rock n roll enthusiast which would make them wanna jump for joy. The cons are clearly the records we recorded many years back where we were not using this incredible combination or gear, we simply think to ourselves, what in the hell were we ever thinking!
How long have you had it, how do you use it, would you ever change it?
Roger: I have been using this exact setup of guitars and amps for the past 4 years. In that time writing and composing 100s of songs for The Raskins including the 12 songs on our upcoming self-titled debut album out May 13th, as well as several movies and TV shows out in the entertainment market today.

Any final thoughts or comments on the gear?
Roger: Having companies such as Marshall and GMP in our lives has made our most recent musical journeys and experiences quite memorable. Getting to listen back to all our recordings and videos its so gratifying knowing were capable of producing such a perfect rock n roll sound that fits for us like your favorite old pair of shoes you will never throw away. To see the smiles from all our fans faces at our live shows is priceless for us. It's a pleasure being able give them all there money's worth night in and out with the highest quality performance and sound ringing through one ear out the other... All i can say is LONG LIVE ROCK!
Check out the song "We Had It All"

The Raskins' Logan Talks Music and Touring with that Brotherly Love in-Place

For twin brothers Logan and Roger Raskin they knew after inheriting their melodious genes from their parents that they had something and it was music from here on out. The Raskins have been doing their thing as just a duo for quite sometime now and will continue to dominate the music scene with their music, show playing, touring all over, with much more just within their reach it's uncanny as to how far they will end up or go. One of the brothers Logan Raskin took the time to talk about the band's presents, music, and touring ahead.

1. What type of band are you?

Logan: We are a rock n roll band form New York City. Our style has a bit of Pop/Punk/Retro/ and Alternative in there as well. If you love high energy mixed with harmonies and great melodies, than The Raskins are the band for you.

2. Tell us the brief history of your band.

Logan: We have been together for about 3 years. The Raskins started off as a writing project. Both Roger and I (Logan)  were writing music for TV and Film for several years. We received huge amounts of fan email from all over the world requesting where they could buy our music and when they could see us play live. We felt it was just time for us to put this project up on its feet as a physical band, record a new album and start touring.

3. Why do you think music was the outlet for you as a person?

Logan: Roger and I (Logan) grew up in a very musical family. Our father was a big musical Broadway star and mother a jazz singer in New York City. They were very influential in our careers. Teaching us how to play musical instruments at a very young age. We were composing our own music by the age of 10.

4. Do you think being from California influences your sound?

Logan: Well Roger and i are from Chelsea New York City. Growing up in that area had a huge impact on our sound and style for sure. The music club scene was incredible along with the amount and quality of musicians and bands you would see in these clubs on any given night. Artists and bands such as The Stoogies, The Ramones, The Plasmatics, The Velvet Undergound, Joan Jett, The New York Dolls, and Blondie just to name a few... The rest of the band that surrounds Roger and myself are all from Hollywood Ca. We recorded a lot of our record as well as shot some of the music videos in Hollywood as well.

5. What ís the origin of the bands name?

Logan: While writing music for TV and film, all the music supervisors would address us as The Raskins because being identical twins they couldn't tell who was who. When it came time to put this project and band together we felt that lets just keep the same name they have been addressing us by which happens to be our last name The Raskins. Just made the most sense to us...

6. Who are your musical influences?

Logan: Definitely our influences are derived from our surroundings growing up in Chelsea NYC with bands such as The Talking Heads, Living Color, The Ramones, Blondie, The Stoogies, The NY Dolls, Patti Smith, Simon and Garfunkel, Steely Dan etc.

7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)

Logan: We write all our own music. We have been composing music since the ripe ole age of 10. Composing music is a love of ours we have had our whole life. We built a recording studio in our home so we could record our musical ideas at any given moment. For this debut album we recorded approximately 60 demos where 12 of those ended up on the album. For us it very fulfilling to be able to express ourselves through music. This album we used as an opportunity to express our trials and tribulations growing up and adventures through the music industry. You definitely get a sense of who we are and where we come from by listening to our new album.
8. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Logan: We love to write about our experiences growing up in New York City as well as our trials and tribulations in and out of the music industry. We have met a ton of very interesting people along the way and developed some interesting relationships as well, which seems to be a favorite topic of ours

9. Tell me about your album "We Had It All ".

Logan: Well the album is a self titled debut "The Raskins" and the first single we decided to release of the album is a track titled "We Had It All". We decided to go with this single because of its content and energy. The song is written about our journey through the music industry, singing about the trials and tribulations of that journey with all the ups and downs etc. The high tempo straight for rock melody ripping through this particular track we felt was the perfect choice to represent us and give people an idea of who we are and what our sound is like.

10. Why did you guys want to be a duo act instead of a full fledged act?

Logan: We actually are a band but felt that it was important for us to have a strong foundation which starts with Roger and myself (Logan). We know that a least with the 2 of us there would me more of a chance for longevity, marketing, and success at this stage in our lives and musical careers. Being identical twin brothers that can sing and perform together would peek the interest of the public a bit more and would give us the opportunity of getting our music out to the masses.

11 What are your upcoming plans for this year?

Logan: We will be on tour with Motley Crue and Alice Cooper through Thanksgiving. Then there are some other touring possibilities coming up for us. going out with bands such as Blondie, The Cult, Joan Jett, Red Hot Chili-Peppers, HIM (in Dec) and ACDC 2015..Then we are looking to head over to Europe Sept 2015. Can't wait!

12. What do you hope for in 2014?

Logan: Well for us the main goal is to expose us a get our music out to as many people as possible. We plan to tour as much as humanly possible as well as doing as much live Radio and TV as we can fit into our busy schedule. The fans are the most important thing for us and the true reason we exist. Want to give them all the opportunity to experience The Raskins live as well as meet us. 2014 is off to an incredible start. Lets hope we can keep the musical train moving forward..
